Arklow Town poor in attack against relegation threatened Greystones AFC

Arklow Town FC: 1
Greystones AFC: 2

The odds were in The Town’s favour with Greystones AFC sitting bottom of the league before the match however Arklow were poor in front of goal.

Before kick-off a moment of silence was held in respect for the passing of Seamus Donegan. Donegan was a former chairman, director and manager for Arklow Town.
He was loved and respected by many and it was a very tragic loss for his mourning
family and friends.

Arklow Town sit 5th in the LSL Senior Division 1 following the defeat. Arklow have
now gone winless in their last six home matches. Despite chance after chance for Arklow they were unable to put the ball in the net until late in the game with a strike off the post from Jonathan Kelty. Jonathan Kelty previously played for Bray Wanderers making 8 appearances for them in the League of Ireland premier division in the 2012 season.

Greystones’ Karl Manahan was a regular in the LOI First division for Bray Wanderers
and Wexford FC before returning to Greystones. Manahan was solid in defence
keeping Arklow at bay.

An early header from Greystones’ Mark Gray saw them take the lead. Gray has
been a regular goal scorer for The Stones this season with 3 in their last 5 games.
Cormac Byrne slotted a tidy finish home for Greystones to put them two up before
the end of the first half.

Arklow’s attacking play was unpromising throughout the match. Despite brilliant
link-up play early in the match and great counter-attacking play throughout,
Arklow’s chances weren’t finished well. Two late strikes in the box went wide which
could’ve levelled the match for The Town.

Arklow’s Tom Murphy kept Arklow in the match late in the second half with superb
keeping however it wasn’t enough. The home advantage didn’t help Arklow despite Greystones winning just 2 out of 9 games away now. Arklow Town previously faced Greystones AFC earlier this season with a 0-2 win away from home.
