Arklow gets invested in United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The décor of the libraries in Arklow and Wicklow Town were transformed last week with the installation of new United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) wall art and cube seating, which was sponsored by SSE Renewables.

This sponsorship was in recognition of the work that the Council, and in particular the library services and Climate Action Team, have undertaken to promote the SDGs and strengthen their links with local communities.

The 17 Goals, adopted by all UN member states in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, serve as a blueprint for global peace and prosperity. They represent a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and enhance the lives of all individuals.

In response to the welcome installation, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr. Aoife Flynn Kennedy saidI’m delighted by this recognition of our council’s dedication to promoting sustainability and community engagement through initiatives like the SDGs. The seating cubes and wall art add colour and encourage children and parents to take note of the 17 goals”.

Deirdre Keogh, Community Engagement Manager with SSE Renewables said “SSE is delighted to support the library service in helping to promote the 17 SDGs. Our community funding programme will continue to support such worthwhile programmes. SSE are committed to being operationally net zero by 2050 and have set 2030 business goals aligned with the SDG’s, such as increasing renewable energy by fivefold, enable low-carbon generation, and champion a fair and just energy transition.”

SSE Renewables are committed to supporting local communities where they operate. They appreciated the opportunity to support the work carried out by Wicklow County Council and in particular the Library Service and the Climate Action Team.
