Atlantic Bro-ing Homecoming in Arklow this weekend

Arklow legends Andrew and Eamon Breen will be welcomed back to their hometown of Arklow this Saturday 24th February.

The incredible brothers completed the World’s Toughest row last month having started out last December with the aim of completing one of the world’s toughest endurance challenges. Over 42 days at sea, the brothers managed over 1.5 million oar strokes covering a colossal 4,800 kilometres (that’s 3,000 miles for those of us still working in old money!)

Their Epic Atlantic journey began at La Gomera, in the Canary Islands and took the Breen brothers across the Atlantic ocean to Antigua, at the heart of the Caribbean. With their social channels safely entrusted to Shark Bait Socials for the duration of their challenge, followers were treated to daily updates, stunning sunsets and were able to follow the brothers’  as they journeyed across the Atlantic.

You may be asking why two seemingly sane young men would undertake such a challenge. Apart from the self satisfaction, pride of the Country and the immense adrenalin rush of completing such a feat of human endurance, the brothers are rowing for two charities close to their hearts.
In a touching tribute to their eldest brother Rory who passed away at just 10 weeks old, Eamon and Andrew named their boat ‘Rory’ meaning their brother would be with them in more ways than one for the 6 week trip of a lifetime.

Speaking on social media, Andrew Breen praised the support he has received from the people of Arklow both throughout the event itself but also during training in the run up to the Big Row!
‘This is very special for us and showcases how much support we felt throughout this journey – from the training support of Arklow Rowing Club and Arklow Sailing Club to all the messages of support we could see while we were on the ocean rowing across, it has just been so nice to see the town pull together supporting us.’ – Andrew Breen
The homecoming takes place this Saturday, 24th February at 4.30pm from Arklow Marina, North Quay. Weather permitting, the RNLI will be escorting the rowers up the river where they will disembark at the Sailing Club for a meet and greet with family, friends & supporters. We’ll see you there!
